The Dilemma Of Working Women

By Saima AkhtarThe 21st’s growing trend of women as breadwinners in the family especially in urban areas are now paying its repercussions like always. Women, who martyr themselves in adverse circumstances to go out of their way, are sadly the ones to pay the price in the end. The story of rural areas is slightly a different one.

In a country like ours, where women are usually despised and discouraged by the elders of the family to go out and work, there is a new species of men out there, who actually make sure their women work, even against their will. This gives them an opportunity to stay at home comfortably and spend the hard earned money brought by the ‘foolish martyrs’ with an open hand.

Working janitorial staff, and the maids of the house are a clear example, but this is just not it. There are others in the educated families where being married to a wrong guy or being the eldest in the siblings, a woman sacrificing herself for the family is only taken for granted in the end.

This ‘atypical class of men’, stay at home themselves , quite against the laws of nature while setting their women free to win the bread for the family is not only shameful, it is humiliating to them as well. These women develop many kinds of physical illnesses, mental disorders and emotional disturbances. This unbalanced situation is surely heading them into being crippled slowly and gradually exhausting them completly.

A woman’s structure is designed by nature, for home and light work without a doubt. Unfortunately, these mutated working species bears most burden of the outside world alongside the inside chores of a house. This altogether gives me a picture of a constricted bull, bound on fields for the rest of his life, aimlessly.

A woman who works against her will and under obligations is no profitable a share for any employer. She has certain behavioral problems against all. She whines against the boss, is not particularly happy with the colleagues and is hard on subordinates. In short, she may be taking away quite a sum to support the family but she in no way is of any use to the nation.

Let’s picture another woman who is working happily to build a career for herself and is supported well by the family. She envisions herself as strong, confident individual and contributes to the learning at workplace and brings in the gains for the company too. She gives freely of her outputs and doesn’t hesitate in voicing her opinions. She is growing freely and proving her strengths as amongst the finest ‘brains of the country’.

I in no way am an opponent of women working, in fact, I strongly support it. A working woman is just the type needed to take care of a home and economy, but above all, to care for herself. Discouraging however is the attitude of the present day’s Pakistani man who thinks for himself alone and forgets all about the ‘tender gender’ who is nothing else but a liability on him not as per the religion alone but ethically too.
